Metacognitive Blog

Overall I think this has been a very productive semester. I've learned a lot from emotional intelligence to virtual high schools. I've also helped others learn this semester, from helping Dr. Keane with her workshop at Lower Richland High School to us giving our own OpenOffice Calc workshop at the Lowman Home. All in all it has been a very rewarding experience and definitely one I won't soon forget. I've learn that it's not only very important to gain as much knowledge as you possibly can, but to share it with others so that they will be able to help themselves more along the way. If I haven't done anything this semester I can surely say that I have accomplished that. I've learned a lot more than I expected in these few short months and I've definitely helped others to learn a lot more than I expected to also.

Blog 7

Dr. Keane told us that the workshop that Randall and I gave is one the ones that the residents requested for next time. I'm glad to hear that they enjoyed it so much. After giving the workshop I thought that they would just toss what we gave them to the side and forget about it. Obviously, that's not the case since they said they would like more of OpenOffice Calc. I must admit, when we were first assigned this project I just looked at it as another task to complete to get through this course. Now that I see how well everyone responded to it I'm very proud of the job that both Randall and I did. I never imagined the response we got would be as accepting as it's been. If there is one thing that I have learned from this project it is to be more enthusiastic and optimistic towards the tasks that I'm assigned because just because it may seem somewhat meaningless to you you never know what it may mean to whoever is on the receiving end.

Blog 6

My partner and I finally gave our workshop at the Lowman Home last week. I think it went pretty good. I'm glad Dr. Keane was there and she agreed that it went well. We had about six or seven people show up for the OpenOffice Calc workshop. Once we finished our spill on the program and turned them loose on it they seemed to enjoy it. Most of them were fascinated with the different controls and the formulas we showed them that did the calculations for them. Overall it was a pleasant experience and I enjoyed helping them learn something that could possibly help to make their lives a little easier. My only regret is that I wasn't able to attend some of the other workshops that were held before ours. I'm sure most of them took to that material just as quickly as they did ours.

Blog 5

I recently helped Dr. Keane with her workshops at Lower Richland High School. I'm sure I learned as much as the students did. I thought it was interesting to see who was actually paying attention to what we were trying to teach them about iGoogle or the programs here at the college. Some of them found the workshop very interesting and some of them seemed to be bored with it all together. I was able to talk to a few of the students one on one about the college and the programs it had to offer. I thnk we made a definite connection with a couple of the students. One of the students took a picture of Dr. Keane and I. The sad fact of the matter is that no matter how hard you try you can't reach everyone for one reason or another. I just wished that those young people wouldn't give up on themselves so easily.

Blog 3

This week we began searching for more articles to support our topics and annotated bibliographies. My topic is Motivation in E-learning. I started with Keeping E-learners Interested, but I think Motivation in E-learning is a more direct approach and that I'll be able to find more supporting articles for that topic. So far I have three of the necessary articles for the bibliography. One of the articles discusses five strategies to enhance learner motivation in e-learning design. It tells how to incorporate past successful instructional enhancers into current e-learning courses. It is a very interesting article and I'm sure there are more out there to be found. Blog 2

I got together with my partner to discuss our approach to our presentation. We're both happy about not having to give it until mid-November, which gives us more than enough time to give a very good presentation. This semester has taken off very quickly and it seems like it's not planning on slowing down at all. I am looking forward to working with the 343 students that we will be mentoring. It was just last semester when I took that class and I wish we worked with students that have already taken it. I think it would have allowed us to get some insight on what to expect from the rest of the program. I'm sure that's what a lot of the mentees questions will consist of. I'm sure they will have questions about the workshops as well, but most of that will be pretty obvious. I'm sure they will appreciate having someone right there to answer their questions instead of having to ask the professor everything.
